Falling gas prices in Florida are a key reason Memorial Day travel is expected to be up nearly four percent in 2019. According to AAA, 2.3 million Floridians are expected to travel for the long weekend, with increases in the number of people driving, flying and cruising to their destinations.
Those driving will find gas prices averaging two dollars and 64 cents per gallon, the lowest level in two years for the weekend. AAA spokesman W. D. Williams says this should be the second-busiest Memorial Day weekend on record.
“The economy continues strong. Job growth is strong,” said Williams. “We are looking at lower prices for hotels, lower prices for rental cars, and gasoline is about 20 cents a gallon cheaper than it was at the same time last year.”
Williams says Thursday and Monday will be the two busiest travel days of the weekend.
